NJ girl, 14, gets probation for posting nude pics:
You remember the 14-year-old girl from Clifton, New Jersy who posted nude pics of herself on MySpace don’t you? Of course you do, I posted about it here.
Anyway the big stink at the time is that prosecutors wanted to charge her with child porn charges and make her register as a sex offender. Luckily some common sense prevailed. She’s only getting six months of counseling and probation and if she stays out of trouble the charges will be dropped.
Still no charges for the parent(s) that let this happen.

NJ girl, 14, arrested after posting nude pics:
Update: Teen arrested for nude MySpace pics may avoid jail:
I’m sure by now you’ve all heard about the 14-year-old girl from New Jersey who was arrested on child porn charges for posting explicit nude pics of herself on MySpace.
In the past I’ve had no problems with teens who get charged for child porn when they posted pics of another underage kid on MySpace but this is just idiotic. Even Maureen Kanka, the mother of Megan Kanka the namesake of Megan’s Law, says this girl needs help not prison.
According to the second article link I posted more than like the girl will avoid jail time by entering into a plea with prosecutors. Again this is idiotic. The only thing the girl is guilty of is lack of common sense and a lack of self respect.
However I do think that somebody should be charged with a crime. Her parents should be charged with negligence for allowing this to happen in my opinion. I know the law doesn’t work that way but in a perfect world this girl’s parents, or parent, would be held liable for not keeping better track of their daughter’s online activities.
This is how girls end up getting abducted. As a parent you need to remain ever vigilant of your kids’ online activities.
And for those pervs who I know are looking for the pics in question I have it on good authority that they can be found here.

Dover teen gets 90 days over MySpace stabbing:
Stephanie Torres of Dover, NJ was the woman who stabbed her boyfriend’s sister with a pen knife after the 12-year-old girl erased a comment from allegedly Torrres’ MySpace.
Well after stabbing the girl in the neck, arms, and ribs she’s only been sentenced to a mere 90 days behind bars with time served. So she’ll really only spend about two months in jail.
Torres allegedly has intermittent explosive disorder and said that she wouldn’t be able to get the help she needs in prison. Maybe you should have gotten help before you repeatedly stabbed a 12-year-old girl.
The sentence is a joke and the judge should be ashamed but then again it is New Jersey.

Sex offenders nabbed on MySpace and Facebook:
The state of New Jersey has arrested 3 sex offenders that were found to be on MySpace and Facebook.
The perpetrators were Stanton Ulmer, 32, of Neptune Township, Felice Black, 24, of Paterson, and Pietro Parisi, 34, of Westville.
While the New Jersey AG, Anne Milgram, is busy patting herself on the back I think this shows that recent legislation is not keeping sexual predators off social networks.

New Jersey asks 12 Web sites to check for sex offenders:
New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram has not only asked MySpace for sex offender information she’s also asked eleven other sites to do the same.
Attorney General Anne Milgram has asked for information from Xanga.com, Facebook, Community Connect, TagWorld, Bebo, MyYearbook.com, Tagged, Friendster, LiveJournal, Imeem, Hi5 and Gaia Online.
I’ll give her this much, she’s thorough. Some of those sites I hadn’t even heard of. But like other state Attorneys General she’s picking on MySpace…
The Attorney General’s Office has issued three subpoenas to MySpace, but the 12 other sites will soon be getting letters from Milgram asking for help.
And also like the other state Attorneys General there’s no mention of parents doing a better job of monitoring their children.

Cops: Girl victim of MySpace assault:
19-year-old Jhor Guerra of New Brunswick, New Jersey has been arrested for having sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl he met on MySpace.
Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne J. Forrest said Guerra and a 22-year-old man met with the girl and another 13-year-old girl in an apartment in the Somerset section of Franklin. The men gave the girls alcohol, and Guerra “engaged in sexual activity” with one of the girls, Forrest said.
The victim reported the sexual contact to Dunellen police at about 11:45 p.m. July 20, Forrest said. Forrest said the victim told police she had met Guerra on MySpace.
I was able to find two MySpaces for Guerra however they are both bare bones. In true MySpace fashion there has been a MySpace set up by his supporters entitled obviously enough FREE JHOR.

2 charged in death following MySpace postings:
21-year-old Daniel Gjertsen of South Jersey died of alcohol poisoning after consuming too much at a New Year’s Eve party. Like in most of these cases friends started posting memorial comments on his MySpace. Some of those comments have led to criminal charges.
There was an apology from one friend, who said he was sorry there was so much liquor; another seemed to read like a defense, asserting that Gjertsen did not drink more than he usually did. Friends who were not at the party posted messages saying they were upset that more was not done to keep Gjertsen alive.
And there were references to a video taken at the party with images of Gjertsen having passed out. The family told South Brunswick Police Detective James Ryan about it.
When police asked the woman and girl who were said to have shot the video about it, they at first denied there was one, Ryan said. Eventually they acknowledged that it did exist, and the detective got a copy.
On Tuesday, the department charged the two – Yajaira Flores, 20, of Clark, and a 17-year-old Roselle girl whose name was not released because of her age – with obstructing justice.
Flores, who was Gjertsen’s fiancee, was released on $500 bail. The disorderly persons offense she is charged with carries a maximum offense of six months in jail.
I was unable to find a MySpace for Ms. Flores.

Seven Parsippany students suspended for MySpace accounts:
Is this hypocrisy or not? You make the call…
PARSIPPANY — Seven Parsippany High School students will serve 5-day suspensions starting next Monday for setting up two MySpace.com accounts filled with photos and “vulgarities” about classmates and teachers, Interim Superintendent James Dwyer said today.
The students used cell phone cameras to photograph classmates and other school employees without their permission, Dwyer said. He did not say how many photos were posted.
A teacher surfing the Internet stumbled across one of the MySpace sites two weeks ago, Dwyer said, prompting an investigation by high school principal Anthony Sciaino and the school’s police resource officer.
All seven students — two freshmen, three sophomores and two juniors — admitted to their involvement last week and both sites have been pulled from the Internet, Dwyer said. The group included both boys and girls, he said.
However…
Dwyer, who defended Parsippany High School’s decision to hold a mock war crimes “trial” of President Bush by a senior class several weeks ago, said there was no contradiction in punishing students over Internet postings that included “profanity.”
He did not describe the comments that were made.
“This is not a free-speech issue,” said Dwyer. “They were using photos of students and staff without permission.”
Free speech for some but not for others? Discuss.

Former Boyfriend Seeks Revenge On MySpace.com:
(CBS) CLIFTON Police say Neftali Soto sent intimate photos of his ex-girlfriend to students at the Christopher Columbus Middle School in Clifton, NJ where she’s a teacher.
They say the 26-year-old did it by setting up a sham account on MySpace.Com, pretending to be the teacher.
They were intimate photos they took on vacation, the kind lovers would take in this digital age, said Joseph Del Russo, Passaic County’s Assistant Prosecutor.
Authorities say Soto stole the photos from his ex’s computer because he was angry over their breakup.
Then, according to investigators, he used MySpace’s search engine to identify students at the school.
When a mom found out, she forwarded the pictures to her own account and she was able to freeze time. Del Russo said.
That’s how investigators say they were able to link the photos to Soto’s computer.
MySpace had the usual non-answer…
When asked for comment about this story, MySpace.Com said they have all kinds of safety nets to make sure inappropriate material doesn’t make it on the site.
Apparently their safety net has Buick sized holes in it.
