The Mob is watching

Social networking puts staff at risk of Mafia extortion, warns ex-FBI agent:

As if you needed yet another reason not to post your personal info on MySpace or Facebook.

Former FBI Agent Joe Pistone told Computer Weekly that the Russian and Italian mobs are using the personal information they glom off of social networking sites to either extort or corrupt companies and individuals.

I don’t think Joe Blow who lives down by the trailer park who makes minimum wage at the Choke ‘n Blow who accepts porn stars as his MySpace friends has anything to worry about.

Still, even if you’re not a CEO it’s still a good idea to not post your personal information online. There are still lesser criminals who can make use of your information.

Teen plotted murder for boob job money

Police say teen plotted to kill mom for breast implants:

18-year-old Nikita Lee Weis of Fountain, Colorado was arrested for plotting to have his mother killed. His motive was that he would take her money then get breast implants for his girlfriend Sophia Nicole Alsept.

Aslept and two men that Weis hired, Juan Antonio Velez Gonzalez, 18, and Brandon Michael Soroka, 19, are alleged to have attacked Weis’ mother at her home with a baseball bat but she escaped.

Thanks to LiLO we have two MySpaces of Brandon Soroka.

In this one it says that the Soroka world is coming to an end. There’s a lot of truth in that statement. He’s also pictured with a abay in his lap. I hope that’s not his or else the baby will be seeing its dad through a glass window for a while. I think this one is more fitting since that’s what his living quarters may look like for a few years.

Canadian Nexopia predator sentenced, sort of

Child porn luring man gets jail time:

I originally posted about Ian Stuart Johnson here. Back in January Johnson, of Calgary, pleaded guilty to child porn charges and trying to lure underage girls over the Canadian social site Nexopia.

He was sentenced to time behind bars yesterday but only for 15 months. No offense to my Canadian readers but it seems that Canadian sentences are almost as bad as the British ones.

15 months behind bars for an obvious predator is a joke. In 15 months he’ll be back on the streets again looking for his next victim.

Lori Drew told her hairdresser

She Even Told Her Hairdresser:

Lori Drew was so pleased with her little scheme against 13-year-old Megan Meier that she bragged about it to not only her hairdresser but to other acquaintances as well. Until Megan killed herself over it then Drew tried to cover up any connection to the scheme.

Court papers which The Smoking Gun has posted show how callous Drew was during the whole fake ‘Josh Evans’ MySpace which led to Megan’s sucide.

YouTube under the gun

Finnish gunman’s video puts YouTube policies back in spotlight:

Last year after the shootings at Jokela High School in Finland I called on YouTube to revise its policy about videos such as the ones that Pekka-Eric Auvinen posted prior to the shootings. Of course the Google owned company didn’t heed my words. Why would they? I’m just one blogger and they’re a multi-billion dollar corporation. However that warning has come back to bite them in the ass with Matti Saari and the Kauhajoki School shooting.

As I mentioned before Saari posted similar videos to the ones Auvinen made prior to his shooting spree. Not to mention all the mutant videos that pay tribute to the Columbine killers. I wonder if it will finally take the deaths of 10 people in Finland to rethink their policies.

Stop relying on the users to flag inappropriate videos. Considering the stereotypical YouTube user this is kind of the videos they live for.

Like I’ve said before, if Google can censor the entire country of China I would imagine they could do a better job in screening their videos.

MySpace monkey business

MySpace Helps Catch Suspected Monkey Thief:

19-year-old Steven Labore was arrested for stealing two monkeys from a Pennsylvania wildlife compound. Police were able to identify him through his MySpace page. Labore and cohort Michael Naylor broke into the compound because they thought marijuana was being grown in the compound’s greenhouse.

For your lack of obvious smarts and chimpnapping deeds you two have been awarded…

Users protest, defend Facebook face-lift

Link

In the past week, CNN has received more than 200 unsolicited e-mails from people complaining about the new Facebook. Several online petitions are circulating that urge Facebook to give users the option of returning to the old format. One, Petition Against the New Facebook, was launched by Scott Sanders, a student at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, and has more than 1.5 million names.

That’s 1.5 million people that seriously need to get a life, or go outside or something.

Hospital workers fired for MySpace pics

2 NM hospital workers fired for taking photos:

Two employees of University of New Mexico Hospital were fired for taking close up pictures of injuries that came in through the ER then posting them to their MySpaces.

The MySpaces were private but that didn’t stop someone from tipping off the hospital.

The article says that law enforcement was not involved but even if the patients faces weren’t shown wouldn’t that still be a violation of HIPAA laws? healthcare workers know what I’m talking about.

What is it with some ER workers and paramedics where they have to photograph everything for their collection?

Close to divorced man busted for child porn, solicitation

Man Charged With Soliciting Teen For Sex:

40-year-old Charles R. Mowder of Midlothian, Illinois was arrested for trying to solicit sex from a 16-year-old girl. Illinois’ age of consent is 17.

A woman, who I assume was the girl’s guardian, found the e-mails that Mowder was sending to the girl and notified police. Police in turn searched Mowder’s computer which turned up child porn.

Accoring to one of Mowder’s MySpaces

About me:

i am a gentleman in chicago very close to divorce, into bdsm, travel, and seeking someone to join me for fun, and maybe more.

Who I’d like to meet:

someone interesting, bi, and that is looking for fun, and maybe more. one that is a sub, and seeking a bdsm lifestyle

I bet that divorce is closer than it was before.

You know it’s that he’s bi or into BDSM that would have tipped me off to him being a creeper. It’s his lack of capital letters that would have been a tip off to me. If he misspelled all his words he probably could have passed as a teenager.

Thanks to Mr. A for the tip.
